Ian Collier
Consultant
Ian has more than 20 years’ experience
in Capital markets, having specialised in
the Bond and Derivatives markets. He was
an early leader in developing derivatives
in the London Market, helping in the original
design of LIFFE’s Gilt Future and
Gilt Option contracts.
Ian graduated from the University of Sussex
where he read Mathematics, Economics and
Statistics. He joined The London and Manchester
Assurance Company studying to be an actuary
and becoming a fellow in 1977 whilst he
was working for the Swiss Reinsurance Company.
In 1979 he joined James Capel and Company
as a gilt salesman, becoming a partner in
1983. He founded James Capel Futures and
set up their trading and futures team on
LIFFE. He wrote extensively about futures
for the clients of James Capel and gave
many lectures and presentations.
Ian then set up the bond option department
for James Capel and also ran a large floor
team on LIFFE making markets in options
on bond futures. After the amalgamation
of the HSBC, Midland Bank and James Capel
groups, the section became the largest Bond
Option Market Making team in Europe. From
1997, Ian ran HSBC Greenwell, the largest
Gilt Market Maker, and later specialised
in exotic derivatives.
Training has been an integral part of Ian’s
career, as has giving internal presentations
and addressing external organisations. Ian
trains the major aspects of the debt capital
markets, with particular emphasis on derivatives.
